Что такое жемчуг?

Существует несколько версий, объясняющих происхождение слова жемчуг.

Некоторые исследователи считают, что слово происходит от:

• арабского зеньчуг
• татарского "зеньджу"
• китайского zhen zhu ("чжень чжу").

Данное слово имеет несколько значений:

1) Жемчуг — минерал класса органических соединений, твёрдый округлый объект, извлекаемый из раковин некоторых моллюсков. Ценится как драгоценный камень и используется для производства ювелирных изделий.

Характеристики:

Формула: Арагонит и конхиолин 

Цвет: Белый, желтоватый, серебристый, золотистый, кремовый, голубой, зелёный, чёрный, серый

Цвет черты: белый

Блеск: перламутровый

Прозрачность: просвечивающий до непрозрачного

Твёрдость: 3-4

Спайность: отсутствует

Излом: скорлуповатый

Плотность: 2,60 - 2,78 г/см³

Показатель преломления: 1,52 - 1,66, у чёрного - 1,53 - 1,69

2) Жемчуг - нечто драгоценное/возвышенное. (примеры: "Жемчуга" - название третьей книги поэта Н.Гумилёва, русский крейсер "Жемчуг").

3)Банально красивое название и отличный рекламный ход(пример: зубная паста "Жемчуг").

4) Топоним (пример: посёлок Жемчуг Тункинского района на границе респубики Бурятия с Иркутской областью).

Кстати, различные производные от этого слова, также являются топонимами (пример, посёлок Жемчужный Крымского района Краснодарского края). Именно в качестве топонима, я рассматриваю его в своей статье.
